Photography for Commercial and Advertising Purposes



MattWJ is a San Diego photographer who works extensively with art directors, ad agencies, online stock companies, designers, architects and PR firms. His experience in the art world has given him knowledge of buyers as well as what attracts an eye to an image and sells a product through example. While he shoots mainly digital, he is more than happy to use 4x5, medium format or 35mm film cameras if the job requires it. Experimenting with cameras, both film and digital, is a passion. From building cameras to severely modifying them to get an achieved look, Matt loves to play around.



The Right Image for Your Purpose


Photography is one of the most powerful tools for persuasion that the human race has devised. But not all pictures are equally effective. The difference between a great image and a pretty-good image is, to paraphrase Mark Twain, like the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. No one can guarantee you a great image for your next project, but you can vastly improve your chances by working closely with a photographer who understands what you need and can bring experience and creativity to bear on solving your problems.



Identifying Your Needs


The first step in planning for photography is identifying what sort of images might best represent your project themes. Are there any specific concepts, product features or benefits you’d like to highlight? Are there areas that require creative problem-solving? What geo-cultural norms and taboos must be respected? If you are addressing multiple demographics (of age, nationality, social stratum or wealth), what messages will you develop for each, and how will you keep them distinct?

At a strategic level, the answers to these questions will be important in finding the right photographer for the job. Then, at a tactical level, you can discuss them further with your photographer before production starts, both to develop specific imaging concepts and to clearly define the assignment parameters. With those, your photographer will be able to provide good time and financial estimates.

Explaining Usage

An essential component of the photographer's fee is compensation for the rights being licensed. Under federal copyright law, the photographer is the owner of the photograph unless there is a written transfer of copyright ownership. Accordingly, it is important that the photographer and client agree on usages in advance. Generally, the more extensive media exposure a photograph receives, the higher the fee will be for producing it. This principle applies to both assignment and stock photography.

Realistic usage needs should be weighed against budget considerations. Why pay more for something you might not need? Future licensing can be purchased as needed. When your needs outweigh your budget, distinguish between your wants and your needs. Instead of cutting corners on quality, look for getting greater value from your photography dollar. There are always ways to pay less for photography - but bargains can be expensive. Know when the expertise of the photographer will save money in the long run. Find out what services the photographer can offer to make your job easier, quicker, smoother. In all cases, be open and honest with the photographer when negotiating your assignment. Good communications can help you solve your problems and achieve your goals.
